The Penn Ar Bed Shipping Company operates ferries carrying passengers to 3 islands in Brittany (Ushant, Molene and Sein). Their hydraulic systems must be in perfect working order to guarantee their ferries are not stopped for long periods of time.

For this case study, our mission consisted in:

  • solving problems with the stabilisers
  • finding a solution to problems due to the disintegration of filter elements
  • obtain the Cleanliness Class ISO 4406 = 17/15/12

IDENTIFICATION OF PROBLEMS

THEIR PROBLEMS:

The stabilisers failed to operate correctly since the response time was poor
Disintegration of Pressure Filters
Contamination of the hydraulic system due to pressure filters

WHAT WE CONCLUDED:

The filter element of the pressure filter cannot withstand a ∆P >10 bar
The disintegration of filters cause contamination throughout the hydraulic system, and particularly at the stabilisers which causes malfunctions.
The ISO code measurement gives values equal to 23/20/16. Therefore, there is 32 times more pollution than the PVG Hydraulic Distributors can accept.

OUR PROPOSAL WAS:

1 – Solve the problem of filter elements exploding by installing HY-PRO PFH pressure filters with a ∆P on the filter element = 210 bar

2 – On the return filters, install adaptable HY-PRO HP319filter elements, 3 µm β>1,000 for restarting (Trap the contamination in the systems)

3 – Put HY-PRO filter elements, 12 µm β>1,000, in place after restarting

4 – Use the CPH2O-PO particle counter to control and validate the operation when the hydraulic system is completely started

RESULTS

AFTER RESTARTING, DURING OPERATION

ISO Code = 17 /15 /10
Pressure filter elements no longer disintegrate
No more hydraulic operation problems with the stabilisers and steering gear.
